Full wave rectifier circuit diagram

A Full wave rectifier is a circuit arrangement which makes use of both half cycles of input alternating current (AC) and converts them to direct current (DC). Just like the half- wave rectifier , a full - wave rectifier circuit generates an output-voltage or current which is absolutely DC or has some specific DC components. The rectifier circuit consists of a step-down transformer, and two diodes are connecte and they are centre tapped. Understand what is full wave rectifier and the working of full wave rectifier circuits with and without filter - central tapped full wave rectifier and bridge. Although the full wave rectifier circuit requires more diodes than a half wave rectifier circuit , it has advantages in terms of utilising both halves of the alternative waveform to provide the output.

These are connected to the center tapped secondary winding of the transformer. A circuit that produces the same output waveform as the full wave rectifier circuit a is that of the Full Wave Bridge Rectifier. Single phase rectifier uses four individual rectifying diodes connected in a closed loop bridge configuration to produce the desired output wave. Another type of circuit that produces the same output waveform as the full wave rectifier circuit above, is that of the Full Wave Bridge Rectifier. This type of single phase rectifier uses four individual rectifying diodes connected in a closed loop “bridge” configuration to produce the desired output.


A diagram of the basic bridge rectifier circuit has a bridge rectifier block at the centre. This consists of a bridge circuit which includes four diodes. These can be individual diodes, or it is also easy to obtain bridge rectifiers as a single component.

In half wave rectification, only one crystal diode is used. It is connected in the circuit as shown below. A Full Wave Rectifier is a circuit , which converts an ac voltage into a pulsating dc voltage using both half cycles of the applied ac voltage.


It uses two diodes of which one conducts during one half cycle while the other conducts during the other half cycle of the applied ac voltage. The circuit diagram of the full wave diode rectifier given below, Full wave rectification can also be achieved using a bridge rectifier which is made of four diodes. But this circuit doesn’t need center tapped transformer so it resembles low-cost rectifier. The two diode format for a full wave rectifier circuit is one of the simplest forms of full wave rectifier circuit in terms of the actual component count.

In rectifier circuits , the voltage drop that occurs with an ordinary semiconductor rectifier can be eliminated to give precision rectification. The below shown circuit is the precision full wave rectifier. With the advent of diodes and thyristors, these circuits have become less popular and the three-phase bridge circuit has become the most common circuit.

For negative inputs, the first section operates as a closed-loop inverter (A=-1) and the second stage is simply a buffer for the positive output. Half wave rectifier is a low-efficiency rectifier while the full wave is a high-efficiency rectifier. Thus, it is always better to use full wave when we are working on the highly efficient application. The working of the full wave rectifier with filter is almost similar to that of the half wave rectifier with filter. A rectifier circuit whose transformer secondary is tapped to get the desired output voltage, using two diodes alternatively, to rectify the complete cycle is called as a Center-tapped Full wave rectifier circuit.

Power diodes can be used individually as above or connected together to produce a variety of rectifier circuits such as “Half- Wave ”, “ Full - Wave ” or as “Bridge Rectifiers”.
